ComeInUnity Family Fun Day 2015

It Was A Good Day

We are still flying high! What a day, what a day! Earlier in the week it was a bit tense due to the fact that by Wednesday there was a 60% chance of rain. Just the thought of rain on such a joyous occasion was enough to make this grown man cry. To think of all the work that was put in, the planning, promotions, emails, phone calls, foot patrol…would’ve been all washed away.

But in the end it was perfect!

The day started out as we hoped, sunny and warm. We arrived at the park early in order to prepare for the day’s festivities. After setting up the stage, music, the grill and food area, tables for the vendors and bounce houses we were ready to kick off ComeInUnity Family Fun Day 2015! Once the grill was lit, it sent out a smoke signal to all those near and far that the day had commenced. The thunderous music reinforced to those that may have been unsure, that it was going down!

It seemed like a blink of the eye and Uniondale park was filled with people from all walks of life. It was a beautiful day as we watched the children play and laugh as they should. Watching their innocent faces stare at the Uniondale firefighters in awe as they did their presentation and hearing them scream with joy as the water from the hoses rained down on them.

For sure it was a great day.

The food line never seemed to diminish as those that manned the grill worked tirelessly to make sure that everyone was fed. The sizzling sound of hot dogs and hamburgers filled the air and brought back that nostalgic feeling of old school cookouts.

Yes it was an amazing day.

Mrs. LaLa with the assistance of Ms. Cynthia was stationed centerfield with a whole range of field day games and activities for the kids, from sack races to tug of war…the kids had a great time competing against their peers. The bounce houses from inflation to deflation remained filled with kids bouncing around and having the time of their lives.

Yes it was a fantastic day.

Throughout the day DJ T.E.O and the crew from Hot 97 did their thing providing some great tunes for everyone to rock to. After all what would a cookout be without the music. Towards the end of the evening we were blessed with some amazing performances from some local talent.

Aria, Cierra & Diana, all products of this wonderful community, representing Lawrence Road Middle School orchestra and the teachings of Ms. Worrilow, performers from Uniondale’s Prodigy School Of The Arts, Mr. Robert Johnson, once homeless, now an educator in the Uniondale School District, Adebisi “Classique” Labinjo who has performed among the likes of Bon Jovi, Travie McCoy, DMX, ASAP Rocky and Skrillex to name a few, also a product of Lawrence Road Middle School and the talented Skinny Rapture hailing from Long Island by way of Jamaica WI, all did an amazing job entertaining our guests. In the midst of the performances we were able to give away a great deal of prizes ranging from pens to free car washes to t-shirts, basketballs and various toys.

We set out to instill a sense of community and togetherness back to our neighborhoods, to show that someone still cares and that if we come together as one there’s nothing we can’t accomplish. We believe that we well surpassed that goal.

Yes it really was a GOOD day.
